The Hydraulic Crane - a great science project!

I had many requests for a step by step instruction of making the "Hydraulic Crane".

Although this wasn't my construction (one of my brilliant students did this one for a project that I assigned), I can figure out the basics from what I saw.

Note: The following is only meant as a start for anyone that wants to try this project. However, everyone has their own twist to every assignment, every design. Use your imagination to make the crane better, and your own!

Materials:

  • 30 mL syringes (x8)
  • dialysis tubing (or any other kind of plastic tubing for connecting the syringes together)
  • wood (for crane construction and for base)
  • anchors (to hold the tubing in place)
  • bottle with water (or any other weight to counter balance the crane arm)
  • a scoop (any kind of shovel)
  • Screws / Nails / Nuts / Bolts
  • + Other miscellaneous materials.

Procedure

  1. Connect four stick of wood together so that they form a crane (as in the above picture). Connect them by drilling holes in both sticks of wood, and attach them with long bolts, securing them with nuts. Make sure the wood sticks rotate easily at the connections. (Think of these as hinges in a door.)
  2. Attach the shovel / scoop to the end of one of the wooden sticks in the same way.
  3. Secure this crane to a wooden base.
  4. To counter balance the weight of the crane and scoop you need to hook on a weight (bottle with water) to the opposite side of the crane (see picture above).
  5. Now for the hydraulics:

  6. Connect four syringes with four pieces of flexible tubing. Make sure there are no leaks between the syringe and the tube connection. Make sure the tubing is long enough - similar length to your crane (see picture above to understand).
  7. Fill in these syringe-tubing systems with water.
  8. Attach another syringe to the other side of the tubing for each of the four syringe-tubing systems.
  9. Now you should have four of these: syringe filled with water / flexible plastic tubing filled with water / empty syringe.

  10. Next you need to attach these syringe/tubing/syringes to your crane. Each one of them is operating a motion up and down - so you should put them at the connections (the hinges).
  11. Secure the syringes and tubing with u-type anchors (as in above picture).
  12. You are done now. To operate, you push in the syringe with water, so that the connected empty syringe moves up the piston... this in turn pushes the wooden stick up. Depending which syringe you push makes that part of the crane move.

why would u build it with kinects?

This is a clever little crane. For a bigger mini crane there are Spider Cranes and Smart-Rig Cranes out there for bigger jobs.

For the wood that is going vertically, how many peices are being used, and how many pieces of wood are being used in this project as a total amount? Also, if you are able to, could you list the mesurements, or take some more photos from different sides, like the top, the front or the back? Thank you

I don't have access to this crane anymore... The student took it with him at the end of the school year. But here is my advice... take this photo as your starting point and then take it your own way - don't duplicate, make it better, make it your own!!!!

What is new in this project?

Break oil or lubricant would have been much better than water.

how can i do modification in hydraulic crane??????

It depends what you want to modify... it's your project, try it out yourself and then figure our what "modifications" you want to do. I don't really understand your question.
