The SharpBrains Guide to Brain Fitness
Over the summer I had the opportunity to read this great book called The SharpBrains Guide to Brain Fitness by Alvaro Fernandez and Dr. Elkhonon Goldberg.
While most of us have heard the phrase “use it or lose it,” very few understand what “it” means, or how to properly “use it” in order to maintain brain function and fitness. The SharpBrains Guide to Brain Fitness is an invaluable guide that helps readers navigate growing brain research and identify the lifestyle factors and products that contribute to brain fitness. By gathering eighteen of the top scientists and offering insight, tools, and detailed descriptions of over twenty products, this text is an essential guide to the field of brain fitness, neuroplasticity and cognitive health. An accessible and thought-provoking read, this book also educates lifelong learners on emerging trends and forecasts of what the future will hold.
What I really liked: The structure of the book was great. Each chapter starts off defining and explaining concepts on brain theory, cognition, and how people learn. The chapters end with a series of interviews with many different scientist actively involved in research on the brain and how people learn. The interviews are very straight forward and felt like conversations. They shed a lot of light onto the subject of cognition and "Brain Fitness".
These interviews were very valuable to me. I found myself constantly going to my notebook writing notes of websites to check out, resources I must look into. Although the concepts on brain theory are complex, the book was easy to read and follow and I found myself very involved in the "interviews" and in the concepts. I recommend this book to anyone that is even slightly interested in learning and teaching and how the brain has anything to do with learning or teaching. Excellent!
