The Shalheveth Freier Physics Tournament
While looking for a Science Olympics in Montreal, I came across another type of competition, called The Shalheveth Freier Physics Tournament.
I have never entered any students or teams into this competition, so I can't recommend it or comment on it too much, but from what I read about it, it seems very interesting. Here's the challenge:
Build a safe that only your team can open, and then try to open the safes of all the other teams. Each team is given a box and a lock mechanism and must use simple materials to build a safe that operates on the principles of physics, able to be opened in less than five minutes, but that will keep opponents stumped for at least 10 minutes.
Seems like total fun, and exactly what a science competition should be about. There are some cool examples of previous projects and how to enter on the website: Weizmann Science Canada. I think this would be an awesome experience for some keeners from my physics class.
