Great Science Movie for kids - "Fly me to the Moon" movie
Yesterday I went to a movie with my sons (2 and 4 year olds): Fly Me to the Moon.
I didn't have huge expectations, as I checked on www.imdb.com (my favorite reviewing site) and the reviews were aweful (5.4/10). However I did go, because it was the only kid movie playing and I really wanted to go to the movies on a cheap Tuesday night. Maybe because of my low expectations I was impressed with the movie, especially the value of it in the science classroom.
It was about these flies that really want to go on an adventure, go to the moon. After not too much trouble, they get to slip into the astronaut's suit and they go into space for the first moon mission (on July 20, 1969 with Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin). At this point is where it gets really interesting: Here I think it becomes a really a great movie for kids in science class or for homeschooled children.
If I was teaching my students about the space missions or space in general, what better way to introduce them to the missions than show them this cool little movie. I don't know for certain, but it seems that the movie follows the real historical events of that day (as close as it can get for a cartoon). I find that it's very hard to find good experiments for "Space" units in general, so a movie is a bit more hands on than textbook learning / reading / listening to the teacher.
I can see a nice science discussion afterwards...
"What happened to the rocket, why did it fall apart?"
"Why did the flag need propping up with a stick?"
"Why did the astronauts jump up and down on the moon?"
"Why did the sky look so dark on the moon and yet the astronauts could see everything? Was it day or night?"
"Why did the astronauts have to wear the huge suits and masks?"
"Why did the space pod start 'burning up' on reentry to the Earth?"
etc.
And did I mention that the movie is in 3-D? (Annother topic to research for the keeners in the class).
Hope you liked the post. Please do me a favour ...
